Autumn Colors in the Shuswap

 Yellow leaves over Adams River

I find the autumnal colors especially strong this year. Golden yellows, burnt oranges, and fiery reds against a backdrop of earthy greens and blues make for a beautiful transitional season and the perfect time for this photo enthusiast to explore some areas of British Columbia that aren't too far from home.

Which is why, not too long ago, I ended up in the Shuswap.

This region is located in southern central British Columbia and is comprised of tranquil lakes, mountainous valleys, friendly little communities, and plenty of things to do if you love the outdoors. The annual salmon run in Adams River is what brought me to the area, but I was mainly enthralled with the colors of the changing leaves. You'll find the peak fall foliage time occurring from the beginning to mid October, and if you visit on a sunny day the colors appear especially saturated.

To give you an idea of just how lovely this area is (and less touristy than many other regions in B.C.), here are some of my favorite photos from a fall day trip out to the Shuswap.

Travel info

The best way to explore this area is by car as there aren't many other forms of regular transportation (other than the dreaded Greyhound bus). This way you'll be able to explore all of the provincial parks, hiking trails, and quaint towns at your leisure. For more info on how to get there, directions, and other useful info head here.
