There’s no such thing as a specific authenticity to what Mexico is, because Mexico is incredibly complex and varied, and the food is completely different if you travel 50 kilometers. It just changes all the time.

Mexico

Look past the news headlines of kidnappings, beheadings, and drug-related violence, and you'll find that Mexico really isn't that scary of a place at all. In fact, quite the opposite is true! Mexicans are some of the friendliest people you'll ever meet. Eager to share their wealth of history and abundance in delicious food with anyone interested, they are truly a warmhearted culture.

For travelers, Mexico is so much more than the resort towns on the Pacific and the Yucatan peninsula.

If you're looking for an authentic experience, skip Cancun and head south to Costa Maya, where you can spend your days kayaking Laguna Bacalar and relaxing in one of many budget-friendly towns along the Caribbean coast.

If you're based further inland, don't pass up the opportunity to explore the colonial towns of Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende, or get to know Santiago de Querétaro, which is only a couple of hours north of Mexico City.

Of course, the hustle and bustle of the capital city is also not to be missed. Dive into local culture with a visit to Frida Kahlo's former home or step back in time at the impressive ancient Mesoamerican site of Teotihuacan. You won't run out of things to do in Mexico City - guaranteed.

Finally, for a laid back stay along the Pacific that feels well off the beaten path, there's no better place than the state of Oaxaca (for my absolute favorite spot, read this).

For the beach bum

From the royal blue hues and the rocky coastline of the thundering Pacific Ocean to the lively turquoise ecosystem of the Caribbean, Mexico is a special destination for those who hold a great love and respect for the sea. Here are a few unforgettable places along both coastlines that are sure to capture your heart.

Man is alone everywhere.
But the solitude of the Mexican, under the great stone night of the high plateau that is still inhabited by insatiable gods, is very different from that of the North American, who wanders in an abstract world of machines, fellow citizens and moral precepts.
