Snowshoeing in a Winter Wonderland

 Snowshoeing

Snow, ice, parkas, frosty temperatures - these seemed to be common themes in almost all of my travels last year.

So it was entirely fitting that I ended spending the holidays with my parents in the wintery Okanagan Valley. It ended up snowing almost every single day, which made for a winter wonderland that I fully delighted in by going ice fishing and snowshoeing.

The snowy landscape was so beautiful I was inspired to put together a post featuring my favorite winter photos from the Okanagan. Since publishing, the article has become one of my most popular posts – be sure to check it out if you haven’t already!

One of my favorite days over the holidays turned out to be right before Christmas, when my parents and I drove up to Apex Mountain Resort to go snowshoeing. When I was younger and still living at home I used to head up to Apex on weekends in the winter for skiing, but up until now I had never really considered it for any other outdoor activities.

Once we picked up our gear from the rental shop and decided on a trail, we strapped on our snowshoes and set off. Right away, I was blown away by the vast amount of fluffy white snow covering the landscape.

This is what winter is supposed to look like.

As we were stepping through the fluffy snow I sometimes caught glimpses of the ski hill next to us and felt grateful not to be stuck in the cold chairlift. That’s the upside of snowshoeing, you can go at your own pace and your body is in constant motion ensuring you stay warm.

If you’re interested in the snowshoeing trails around Apex hop on over to their rental shop where you can rent out a pair of snowshoes for the day. The rental shop will also provide you with a map of the mountain and they can point you towards some fun trails.

Bringing along ski poles or renting them isn't necessary, but I'm glad to have had mine along to help me navigate the trails.

Snowshoeing is a great way to get active while going at your own pace and you don’t need to submit to the stop-and-go rhythm of a day of downhill skiing.

After trying snowshoeing for the first time this winter I can confidently say that this is my new favorite outdoor winter activity.
